FBC PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC
Because each church holds to a somewhat unique position when it comes to music, we thought it best to let you know upfront that our focus is to encourage and to equip the saints rather than to entertain them. (Colossians 3:16).
To do this, we use a blend of older and newer hymns, songs, and choruses. Our focus is somewhere in the middle between the older traditional church that only sings the hymns and the modern contemporary church with their highly trained praise and worship bands.
If you visit one of our services you will find that we have several musicians who play with joy and enthusiasm, and a song leader, who encourages everyone to lift up their voices to the Lord. You will also notice that we seek to avoid music that is patterned after a worldly or carnal style.
In a general sense, this means that we would not use Christian rock music or in other words, music that is primarily known for its driving beat or wailing electric guitars, etc. On the other hand, we do not refrain from using contemporary spiritually minded music that brings glory to God and teaches and admonishes one another with the Word of Christ. Our hymnbook by choice is the CELEBRATION HYMNAL; which includes both older beloved hymns and many contemporary choruses and songs.
Furthermore we believe that every instrument could be used to praise the Lord if it is used in an appropriate setting, if it is played in an appropriate manner, and by someone who is walking in the Spirit and seeking to glorify God in all that they do. But with this in mind you should also know that for a variety of reasons, we have chosen at this time not to utilize drums or electric guitars in our programs, although these instruments are utilized on some of our song accompaniment sound tracks.
While we as individuals in the body of Christ have the freedom to set our own personal musical standards, we would expect an Associate Pastor to uphold the above guidelines in the performance of his ministry.
To sum up our thoughts: If a potential pastoral candidate does not see some of the carnality and the inherent dangers of some of the Contemporary Christian music that is on the market today, he probably would not be comfortable working with this ministry.
